oanja: (text I is a college student)
I think I passed the exams. *fingers crossed* both of them had open essays questions so I didn't have to remember any theorists or historians by name (thank fuck, because my name memory is sooooo bad)

Now I just need to pack my stuff and go visit mom for the weekend. =) And that would be nice, if it didn't mean that I will totally miss the new Supernatural episode (our internet is so slow at home there is no point in trying to download it) and also Hunger Games would have opened in cinemas today... Well I'll just have to go see it next week.

So the agenda for this weekend is to finish writing up my survey form, for my social policy seminar thesis and then hopefully go the the high schools next week and conduct the survey. That would mean I'd still have about two weeks to analyse and write up the reseach paper.

Damn, I feel like I'm actually accomplishing things. \0/ It seems more and more likely that I will be able to wrap up all my studies this spring and then hopefully I can do my thesis during the summer and then graduate in the Autumn. Fucking finally!!!! But then again I've been thinking that it would be awesome to go to graduate school, I mean how cool would it be to have a doctorate... =P
oanja: (text I'm a historian)
I still need to read one book today. "The Gender of History; Men, Women, and Historical Practice" I'm sure it will be a riveting read... If I can manage to finish it today, I'll only have about 50 pages of "Gender and the Politics of History" left. All in all I have to read about 700 pages to get 10 credits... I really hope I'll pass these exams.

I was reading this book about women's history in Finland and there was this photo:

My first thought was that 'aw hipster granny has an iPhone' then I went all wtf and checked the date and found out that the photo had been taken in 1948. Then I laughed and went on a tangent about time travelling grannys. (I was pretty tired at that point)

And while I'm talking about books and history... I read from this book called 'Homosexality: a History' last night and the writer was talking about the Romans and how they had no problem with guys having sex with each other as long as you didn't like it up the arse. And then I learned something new about Caesar, which I will copy here because I found it kind of hilarious.

"Caesar, who had a well-known affair with Nicomedes, the King of Bithynia, was called 'the queen' in public assembly by Octavius, for he had been seen as a cup-bearer at a banquet given by Nicomedes with other exoleti (passive homosexuals). Caesar was mocked in public. It is said that he wore his toga in such a way that it swished languidly upon the ground. But he also had a reputation for seducing women, among them at least two Queens: Cleopatra and Eunoe, wife of King Bogudes of Mauritania. He also seduced the wives of Pompey, Crassius and Servius Sulpicius. Not for nothing was Caesar named omnium virorum, omnium mulierum virum (wife to all men and husband to all women)"

From now on if Caesar comes up, I'll always have this mental image of him walking sassily with his swishy toga... xD and then, you know, stabbing you in the stomach if you laughed at him.

oanja: (walking dead Daryl)
Daryl survived season 2 finale! \0/

(now seriously where is the fic for this pairing?)

But urgh, I have a test on Friday and I need to read four books for it. Even though Gender history is interesting it doesn't mean I wouldn't rather just mess about in the internet rather than study. Also I just got my Temeraire books in the mail today. The world is full of temptations... so I'll just go study in the library for a few hours. >_>

=D

oanja: (stock thesis)
Once again I have proved to myself that I am awesome at writing bullshit academic papers...

Today when I came back from a deadly boring lecture I thought I'd check my school schedule for this month and found a surprise. I had a reseach proposal due today! /0\ It's not anything super complicated, I mean the reseach paper only needs to be about 30 pages and the proposal was supposed to be five pages, but still... I had nothing done. So I panicked for a bit and then started writing. And now four hours later I'm finished and ended up with six pages (because I forgot to add some space between lines so when I edited the finished thing I got an extra page. \0/) Muah ha haaa~ *evil laugh is evil*

In other academic news, I still have no idea what I'm going to do with my master's thesis. =/ Well I finally gathered the courage and sent an e-mail to my advicer today telling her about it, so hopefully she will be able to tell me what I should do... Argh.
oanja: (text then I'm done)
Oh goodness... Why do I do these things? Especially when I don't like how my own voice sounds. But still it was fun. =) Also, I can't seem to keep things brief, I'm such a rambler.

Questions from [info]sneaky_sena beneath the cut.

1. What's your username and is there a story behind it?
2. Where are you from and where do you live now?
3. What are you wearing? Yes, I am hitting on you.
4. How long have you been in bandom? How did you get into it?
5. Which bands are your favorites?
6. Which band members are your favorites?
7. Have you seen any of them in concert? Any fun stories or memories to share?
8. Do you have an OTP? What is it, and why do you love it?
9. What story do you wish someone would write?
10. Are you working on something for bandom right now? Tell us a little bit about it.
11. You've got fic open somewhere on your computer right now, don't lie. So go to one of your open tabs or word documents or whatever, and read us a couple of lines.
12. Say these words: Iero, haberdashery, LOLcat, flist, dirigible, halcyon, nemesis, ephemeral, languorous

Uh, and tomorrow (well today technically) I have a four hour lecture on social security policy... I really hope I won't fall asleep.

But I got my government benefits today, finally! \0/ I've only been fighting with them about this since September.
oanja: (stock mäyräkoira)
I totally forgot to bring the cable for my camera when I went home (as usual) so I didn't have a chance to post any before, but now you shall suffer! *muah ha haa* Ahem sorry.

But anyway my aunt has a new puppy and it would be an affront to my puppy adoring ways not to post some of them. And then there is a photo of my bachelors degree diploma, which was waiting for me here when I got back. \0/

forgive any and all typos, I was in a hurry )
oanja: (text I is a college student)
I just don't get it, it seems the less effort I put into a course the better my grade... Boggles the mind. (totally aced another sociology course. I really am becoming the master bullshitter, if I have learned nothing else in my time as a student in university it is the skill to prattle on and on about nothing for about ten pages...)

Now I need to make a presentation for my immigration and border traffic course and bleurgh! I've had almost two months to prepare but guess who has done absolutely nothing about the whole thing yet? (yes me) Luckily I need to have the paper written in the end of the month so if I can just babble about something for twenty minutes or so I should be okay. (hopefully) also it helps that people have been skipping classes more and more so I doubt the audience will be very big. ^_^

is attempted to make deep dish pizza from scratch, my dish for it was too small so I had to make two smaller ones instead of a one big one. Tastes good though so I'm pretty proud of myself. \0/

Then some bandom!

there can never be too much eye candy )
oanja: (random movie the OC)
I have chocolate pudding and I'm watching NCIS, also I found out that I don't need to get those two credits after all, so basically I have my bachelors done! \0/ Now I just need to fill out this one form and wait three weeks to get my certificate (or what ever is the proper term)
oanja: (bandom Brendon looking up and smiling)
I got the best grade for a gender studies class I had! \0/ Whee~ These things always take me by surprise because in general I feel like a pretty crappy student.

Now I only need two credits, TWO! and then I have my bachelors degree done finally. To put this into perspective I don't have that much to do for my masters degree (if we ignore the fact that I haven't even started my thesis) but yeah, I kind of suck at being organized and doing things in their proper order. ^_^;

Also I listened to my Panic! CD for the first time today, (because I can listen to it on Spotify) and realised that there are three extra songs on it! *facepalm* xD And now I'm listening to 'Oh Glory' on repeat because it's awesome. *nod nod*

My big bang story:

This would be all kinds of awesome but the fact remains that I still have about 10,000 words to write. I have no idea how I thought I would be able to do two stories. Well I guess it would have been totally doable if I had written every day and not like once a week...

I have my second appointment with the physical therapist today.
oanja: (stock damn you gravity)
Is Livejournal doing weird stuff to anyone else? Like giving you an error message when you press the 'post' button when you want to make a new entry? I had to try it again and again at least 4 times before it let me write this...

Also I'm becoming paranoid about whether or not my e-mail is working. I mean rationally it must work because I'm getting LJ notifications and other stuff, but at the same time... Like I sent my teacher an e-mail yesterday and haven't heard from them (and yeah that isn't really a long time but usually she has answered within hours if you sent it during work hours)

What makes me so eager to hear back from her is that I found out someone else has already studied the exact same thing I wanted to research. Can I say bummer?

I went to see the kids are all right today in a Matinée showing and it was so good! I was pretty surprised because I didn't really like the idea of the man coming in and interrupting the family's life etc, but I think it was really well executed. Also I think I identified with Nic a lot, not that I'm a perfectionist like her or anything but there was something in there... Waah~ Can't really say what I liked so much about it, except that it seemed real to me in a way that not a lot of movies are.

This is going to sound bitchy but seriously enough already with the help_japan things! To be honest I think there are a lot better ways to help if people are so inclined and this is just starting to feel like it's all: 'oh look at me, how I'm helping people wah wah wah etc' It seems quite sanctimonious to me. Just give money to the Red Cross or some other charity and be done with it, there is no need to spam every community on LJ about how you will write fic for money or what ever the point of those posts is.  [/end rant] Also this is not meant to address any one person in particular, just the endless spam that is going on on my friends page...

Uh...

oanja: (bandom Brendon's innocent puppy dog eyes)
This was not planned at all, but somehow I ended up pre-ordering the new Panic! at the Disco CD. It would be fine if that was all I had done, but noooo~ I had to order the crazy deluxe bundle thingy. Uh oh... With shipping it was almost a 100$ I really hope it will get here in one piece, after all that money. >_> Waah~ I feel pretty horrible right now, I mean I did not have that much money to waste. Gulp...

Moving on. ^_^; I saw my thesis supervisor again today and she approved my topic and told me to go forth looking for source materials. (uh not sure that's what they are called in English but what evers) I feel pretty good about the whole thing and strangely optimistic that I will actually find enough stuff to analyse etc. I mostly need stuff like diaries or correspondences and maybe memoirs, but we'll see what I can scrounge up.

more about my thesis )
oanja: (Sga John is ded)
Hyperpole and a half is all kinds of awesome, but the quote on the subject line is so true for me right now. Mom is coming here today and I need to clean so bad... I already managed to do the dishes and I'm taking a break right now. Urgh I hate how washing the dishes makes my hands feel. Yuck!

Mom said that we are going to wash Luna while she's here... That will be interesting. She's not too bad while you wash her, I mean she stays still and everything but she doesn't like being dried with the hair drier and it takes ages. =/

But I aced both my exams I had last Friday. \0/ I got 5/5 from the Criminology exam and 4/5 from the other one. Hee~
oanja: (stock weapon of mass distraction)
Weekends are the best, even if you have [livejournal.com profile] messy_kisses  stay over and she is an alien who doesn't know how to sleep in late... (but we have almost finished watching the third season of Buffy, which is cool)
So yesterday I went to bed at 10pm! I was that tired and woke up today at 10. Hah~ Well at least I managed to write that report I had overdue and I think I passed the exams I had on Friday, so I actually feel like I've been productive this week. \0/

And then some fanvids just because.

oanja: (KBell darn it)
I just spent four hours listening to my classmates making presentations about equal rites policy. It was a snooze fest. Also me and my partner kind of rocked ours considering how little preparation we had done. Also I had not done the report for the class but the professor said it's okay to return by e-mail. Must do that this weekend...

I have two exams tomorrow and I still have one two books to read. I'm just that awesome. =P

However, the real reason I wanted to post now was much sillier.
Brendon and Spencer: How so awesome? )
oanja: (text ooh interesting)
So I'm trying to study for my exam on Criminology (the course is for Sociology) and I came across this interesting proposition, that states:
"During wartime the rate of homicides goes up and... in countries where the death penalty is used the rate of homicides is higher than in countries where it is not used. So we can assume that when a country legitimizes killing (in some form) the respect and/or value of human life is reduced in general."
I translated this from Finnish so if it doesn't make sense it's my fault.
¤ I think this can be applied to smaller communities than countries as well. Like gangs of different types of Mafia organizations, so like all organized crime in general. Inside these communities the taking of lives is an accepted way of dealing with conflict.
¤ I looked at some statistics about murder rates by country and then at countries where the death penalty is used and it's not quite as simple as that of course. For instance the country that has the most murders (Colombia) doesn't have the death penalty.
¤ BUT! This is where my addition comes in. I'm not an expert on Colombia, but from what I've heard they have big problems with drug cartels aka organized crime ---> who are okay with killing people, so we still have a society inside Colombia that has legitimized killing even if it's not sanctioned by the government.

And wow... can I ramble or what? xD

big bang stuff )

The national championships for ice sculpture making (wtf is it supposed to be called anyway...) are held right here this year. I'm going to go take a look tomorrow when they have all finished. I hope they are cool, 'cause we had them in my hometown like 5 years ago or something and there was this awesome sculpture of a T-Rex skeleton. I had a photo of it but maybe it's on my old computer. The point is they can be awesome. =D
oanja: (random movie Pride and Prejudice)
(sorry for the vague Pokemon reference) But yeah the flatmate is here, says though that she will be gone again tomorrow. Best kind of flatmate to have in other words. Even if it's terribly awkward trying to talk with her when she's here.

In other news, I went to see my thesis advisor thingy... (not sure what the proper title would be [and I'm annoyed that LJ doesn't think advisor is a word!]) on Wednesday and she was all: 'so do you want to continue with your previous thesis topic?' And I was kind of struck by this sudden freedom of actually being allowed to change my mind about this. ^^; So I wasn't making much sense when she was trying to ask me what I would like to research instead. /0\ So after I left her office I went straight into the library and got about ten books. I already have a few ideas about what I'd like to do, but I have to look into it a bit more. Make sure a million other people haven't already done it a lot better than I ever could. However, I have quite set my eyes on the Victorian period and I'd like to do something about new men's history (which is kind of like women's history but about men... xD) because there is this awesome book by John Tosh called: A Man's Place - Masculinity and the Middle-class Home in Victorian England and I kind of love the topic more than I should. So what we can gather from this is that I will never get my masters degree done this semester...

And I kind of want to change my moodtheme again but it's so much work and I have too many options.
oanja: (stock snowy view)
I have a theory about cold weather: You know when it's too cold outside when you can feel your nose-hairs freezing while you breathe. I think you should never have to acknowledge the existence of your nose-hairs in principle, so that's where I draw the line on cold weather.

So it's been -25 ºC  (-13 ºF) today and it's supposed to be -30 ºC  (-22 ºF) tomorrow and even colder on Christmas eve! Kind of over doing it at the moment Winter... just some friendly advice because I actually like you a lot in general. =)

We went trekking to two cemeteries today, taking candles to the graves and man! It was freezing. Also did you know that it's surprisingly difficult to navigate to the right grave when all the headstones are covered in snow and look the same and it's dark. So that meant some extra time wandering around in the snow. Well I guess it could be written down as a extreme weather survival training in some universe, right? x)

Also we cooked the ham today. Man it is such a tease to get a tiny taste of it before it's put away to wait for the Christmas eve, seriously a tease!

(we are doing all these Christmas traditions in advance this year because we are going to be away for the eve and Christmas day. That should be interesting and in a good way I hope)

Whee~ I just checked my student records (or what ever they are called in English) and I already have 32 credits! Just from the fall semester! And you technically only need 45 per year, so that is awesome for me. Especially because last year this time I think I had zero credits. =D What is not as awesome is that I need about 45 more credits and then my thesis, which is worth 40 credits before I can graduate, sooooo mada mada dane (aka you still have lots more to work on.) As one of my tennis playing friend would say. Haha~ *nervous laughter*
oanja: (random movie Pulp Fiction)
I can has Inception Blu-Ray! \0/
Also I passed an exam that I thought I had failed and even got a good grade! \0/
Tomorrow to Tampere, whee~

Oh and I had an appointment to see my dentist yesterday and it didn't hurt! \0/ Now I can be dentist free until spring, yay!

...yeah more WoW screencaps... )
oanja: (stock weapon of mass distraction)
First of all a reminder about The Christmas card post I want to mail the cards next week, so if you haven't commented yet, you should now. ^^

Car has working headlights again, which is good, but today I noticed that one of the break lights isn't working... *facepalm*

I am very dilligently avoiding my essay writing which I should be doing right now. I need to write at least four more pages. Argh! /0\

Also, who had the brilliant idea that "yes it would be great to have an intensive course on Social Security Policy right before the Christmas break!" I mean the subject is interesting buuuuut *whine* four hours lecture time is just asking for trouble. Who can pay attention to a lecture for that long, even if there is a break in the middle?

And yay [livejournal.com profile] arilyn9  is coming over tomorrow! Awesomecakes. ^^
oanja: (ZQ curious)
One headlight from my car needs to be changed, but is it possible to do that by yourself? Of course not, because that would make your life too easy now wouldn't it? I have a replacement bulb and everything but the headlights might as well have been welded in place, there are so many bolts and screws keeping me from doing this one simple thing. Also bonus points for the weather being bellow -10 so I'd be freezing my fingers out there as well. *bah*

I have a vocabulary quiz for German tomorrow and I haven't studied at all, not to mention the exam I have on Friday. *argh*

The new My Chemical Romance album is good. I like it a lot more than I liked Black Parade.

I got my Death Knight to 75 finally but like I said before, there is no way I can get to lvl80 before Cataclysm... Damn. Also I have to delete a character so I can make a worgen, those character limits per server are a pain in the butt.

While I'm talking about games I'm really thinking of buying a X-box 360 with my tax returns. I mean it would be wise to actually save that money for something  sensible but sensible is soooo boring...

Supernatural (s06e09) was pretty funny, I liked the episode quite a bit and what does that say about the show that the jokey/cracky episodes are the best ones? Nothing good if you ask me. I liked the whole X-files opening sequence and the guys worrying that aliens might be real xD There was a definite lack of Crowley and Castiel though, but I guess you can't have everything.
