History stuff mostly
Mar. 21st, 2012 10:41 pmI still need to read one book today. "The Gender of History; Men, Women, and Historical Practice" I'm sure it will be a riveting read... If I can manage to finish it today, I'll only have about 50 pages of "Gender and the Politics of History" left. All in all I have to read about 700 pages to get 10 credits... I really hope I'll pass these exams.
I was reading this book about women's history in Finland and there was this photo:

My first thought was that 'aw hipster granny has an iPhone' then I went all wtf and checked the date and found out that the photo had been taken in 1948. Then I laughed and went on a tangent about time travelling grannys. (I was pretty tired at that point)
And while I'm talking about books and history... I read from this book called 'Homosexality: a History' last night and the writer was talking about the Romans and how they had no problem with guys having sex with each other as long as you didn't like it up the arse. And then I learned something new about Caesar, which I will copy here because I found it kind of hilarious.
From now on if Caesar comes up, I'll always have this mental image of him walking sassily with his swishy toga... xD and then, you know, stabbing you in the stomach if you laughed at him.
And in other news... I'm really allergic to my rats. This is my arm after I held one of them and he scratched me slightly. It was super itchy. =/

"Caesar, who had a well-known affair with Nicomedes, the King of Bithynia, was called 'the queen' in public assembly by Octavius, for he had been seen as a cup-bearer at a banquet given by Nicomedes with other exoleti (passive homosexuals). Caesar was mocked in public. It is said that he wore his toga in such a way that it swished languidly upon the ground. But he also had a reputation for seducing women, among them at least two Queens: Cleopatra and Eunoe, wife of King Bogudes of Mauritania. He also seduced the wives of Pompey, Crassius and Servius Sulpicius. Not for nothing was Caesar named omnium virorum, omnium mulierum virum (wife to all men and husband to all women)"

Date: 2012-03-21 10:36 pm (UTC)Also, 700 pages for 10 credits sounds like a really good deal! And the things you get to read for them sound really interesting. I hope you get everything read in time and that you'll ace the test! ^^
On my to do list I have two social policy exams with 880+ pages for 5 credits and 400+ pages for two credits. The latter is kind of pissing me of at the moment D: And most of this stuff is pretty boring as I have to take a book exam to cover the scientific study part of the curriculum...
Uh I'm sorry to hear about the allergy thing D: That arm even looks itchy. ó_ò

Date: 2012-03-22 05:10 pm (UTC)Well obviously I need to stop whining then ^_^; but damn it's a lot of books to read in four days... (and that is of course my own fault for not starting to study earlier buuuut.) My sympathies to you for having to read all that boring stuff.
(mutta joo mulla on gender historia syventävien aiheena, että se selittää kirjojen aiheen. =D Ja yhestä on jopa ollu jo apua, että tuun sitä varmaan käyttämään gradussa, kunhan alan sitä joskus tekemään...)
Yeah it sucks that I'm allergic to almost all animals in one way or another, but then again I'm glad it's nothing more severe.

Date: 2012-03-22 06:12 pm (UTC)Heh, didn't quite mean that ^^; Just find it interesting to compare now that I've finally started really doing these test things : ) And I could never, ever read 700 pages of academic text in four days. I don't know how you manage that, it's kind of impressive really!
(Heee mahtavaa!
Ah ok, I didn't know that actually. But yeah, luckily it's not that bad, and you can always try and cover your hands when you hold the rats so that they can't scratch you like that. Have you tried putting some cream or something on it to help with the itchiness?

Date: 2012-03-22 07:27 am (UTC)Interesting history stuff! Also, what time periods did that book about women's history cover?
And yeah, I agree that 700 pages/10 credits sounds good. We have this one course (Koulutus ja sukupuoli) and you need to do a 20 pages essay for 5 credits. 20 pages! That was how long our kandi was! >_

Date: 2012-03-22 05:14 pm (UTC)It's not really women's history per se, more about the history of female historians and it covers the nineteenth and twentieth centuries (It's super boring mostly)
woah, that sounds insane! I really need to stop complaining about these exams obviously because it's much worse in other places. ^_^; Good luck with writing the essay btw.
Also, I think we should skype at some point? It would be nice to chat for a bit. Do you have time next week?

Date: 2012-03-23 08:56 pm (UTC)Yeah, I'm going to ask the teacher if she's really serious. Then I'm going to see if I can take some other course to cover this one (I should, it's not compulsory). I have to write 20 pages of gradu for this spring and I really don't have the time/energy write the same amount for 5 credits. >_<
Yes, we should skype! My web cam isn't working atm but I have my old laptop too, if you want to use video. Next week is okay, I have time on the evenings.

Date: 2012-03-23 09:20 pm (UTC)Sounds like a good idea to ditch the course if it's not a mandatory one.
Yay, I'll be back in Joensuu on Monday so any day next week if fine for me, just let me know when you are online etc. I don't even have a webcam as I don't have a laptop but etc but it'll be nice to just ramble on the 'phone' too. =)
