So I watched it yesterday and thought I'd do a post about it too. I took some screencaps and will add some thoughts about what I liked and didn't like about the episode. There will obviously be spoilers. (It's kind of cool to have this on Netflix. For once it helps not to live in the US when it comes to popular culture)

The episode starts with Michael narrating about space and how there is a myth about a girl who threw ash to the sky and created the Milky Way. This cap is from when she's saying that there is a secret message in the milky way, for someone to find and it shows this red thing lighting up with dots. It looks the same as we see later in the episode where they find the signals

There's this dream like quality to Michael remembering how she met Amanda and Sarek that I found a bit peculiar. I also wonder about Amanda's hair here, I think especially in TOS when we see female Vulcan's they always have their hair done up. Maybe Amanda had hers loose because she was at home

How old is she here? I can't remember if it's said in the first season or not

Why does the house look like this? First of all Vulcan is a desert planet, you would not want to have enormous windows to let in all the sunlight. But more importantly this looks like it's made out of WOOD! And you can see through the window and there are a lot of trees??? Is this established canon? All the scenes I remember from Vulcan are of red sand and rocks

What, why? Didn't they raise Spock to be Vulcan and I definitely remember Spock saying something about how Vulcan's don't have friends or being offended by McCoy saying they're friends or that he and Kirk are friends, or something like that. This show seems to be retconning all of Spock's backstory, which I'm not sure I like at all.

Why? How? How did they make Spock look this bad? Also how old do you think he's supposed to be, like 7 or 8 maybe? What is the age difference between him and Michael?

Look how cute he was in the movie!

So kid!Spock is a total asshole to Michael and for some reason neither of his parents say anything about this incredible lack of emotional control shown, or the illogical behavior. I'm having a hard time figuring out why Spock is acting like this at all? Is he jealous because his parents adopted a kid and worried that... what? His mom will like a human child more than him?

Also while we're talking about Spock's family is Sybok canon in this universe? And did Spock have another sibling or not? I'm a bit hazy on those details.

Anyway the flashback ends and plot happens with the Enterprise crew beaming in and we get the proper uniforms. :D I can't help it, I came to Star Trek with the 2009 movie and then watched most of TOS, so I need the colorful shirts!

but anyway Michael and Sarek continue to obsess over Spock in a way that is a bit odd to me, more like something we as fans would do instead of something his actual family would do. Also this whole episode is such a Spock tease! We never even get to meet him!

She seems to be an alien? Do we know what species? Also what do those metal things do? It kind of looks like a bluetooth microphone but on both sides of her face and weirdly stuck to her cheek instead being at her ear. :D

Yes, I agree, very lovely

I did not like this scene. Why are they talking about something that is surely classified with some random crew member just standing there. Also the sneezing thing was not funny, that was gross and also no wonder some disease is spreading through the ship if that's how things are done and nobody bothers to cover up their face when they sneeze

I'm not sure if this is where this happens, but close enough. It was a really cute and funny moment, but like... are they flirting?

The gifs of this episode were made by https://discovernow.tumblr.com/

So, Pike takes over the ship and we find out what happened with the red dots appearing and how it was a signal, they have the map of the dots? Maybe it's a rough area of where they think the signal came from? And somehow they only know the location of one of them?

We move to Stamets looking at a holovideo of Culbert. I'm super annoyed about this whole thing, where he died and now it seems Stamets is a new and improved softer version of himself, now able to appreciate opera and talk kindly with Tilly and whatever. We never got to see anything much about them in season 1 and I wish we had gotten something closer to the romance Michael had with that Kilngon double agent dude, at least that had progression and twists and turns, instead of this boring thing we got... (sorry, I don't know if this is an unpopular opinion) I just don't find established relationships to bee very interesting in general I guess, if we don't get to see how they got there

I do admit that I loved this bit though! There was a lot of subtext to it

Tilly to the rescue! She was adorable here again. Drunk on power indeed!

This seems wild too, considering how xenophobic the Vulcan't are. Some sort of guest lecturer I could buy

So Stamets is leaving Disco because he can't stand being reminded of Culbert all the time

We jump back to Michael, who is reading a very weird looking book. Did she replicate it? Anyway off we go to flashback land again

I really need to know how old she's here? Because she looked pretty tall and looked older than kid!Spock, but here she's being read a bed time story by Amanda? Is she also 7 or 8?

There was a creepy moment here that I didn't cap where kid!Spock walks in and smiles at them creepily. I have no idea what that was supposed to mean. If we found out that this Spock is a total weirdo who tortures animals and made Michael's life a living hell I would not be surprised... but I don't think that's the indented effect they were going for

The flashback ends as Sarek comes to chat with Michael about how he's leaving the ship as he's on a task force to find out what the red dots are. Is he still an ambassador here, because it seems a weird fit for an ambassador

They talk more about Spock and how Sarek wanted Michael to teach Spock empathy (which fits into my psychopath Spock theory :D) and Sarek says he thinks Spock never accepted Michael and she's like, 'no he did... for a time' which is also weird especially because she was making this face (that is not a happy face)

We go back to the mission and they warp to the red dot, but only find asteroids, one of which has a Starfleet ship stranded on it. They debate about how they can get to it to make sure there are no survivors, or to rescue the survivors. They establish that Pike is not Lorca. We get more lines from the bridge crew than we did in the whole first season (or so it felt like)

They decide to take small pods to the asteroid and instantly get into trouble, as this asshole dude won't take orders from Michael, or Pike and get's killed and also causes damage to Pike's pod

This was stupid. They should always be wearing the space suit in a vehicle like this. Why was it mostly made out of windows anyway?

Pike telss Michael to leave him to die, but she refuses. Also I don't know why but the subtitles don't have the whole like. Michael says: "We have him, right ladies?"

We cut to her and the black woman exchange looks like "fuck, do we have him?" It was very cute and I kind of ship them now! (I'm so bad at names, I should look up what they are called, but I'm too lazy)

The three survivors land and find that there are life signs on the ship and are led deeped into the ship by drones and a voice talking to them. Instantly after asking this question they take off their helmets, like idiots... At least show them using a tricorder to check first!

We find Rono, who is instantly my favourite. Can she stay on the disco, we need an engineer, don't we?!

Seriously, just make a show about her

I love her!

She was totally checking Michael out too here!

'
Plot happens and they set up the beaming thing and manage beam out all the survivors, but Michael is left behind because she's a big hero with a suicide wish

She get's hurt by an explosion

And hallucinates(???) a weird winged alien

Uh, okay

Pike runs through the vision, so it wasn't real(???) and saves her somehow. I have no idea how Disco is able to beam them out without the field thing they had to set up earlier

Michael tries to bring a sample with her but it won't beam back with them. Dun dun dun

Tilly and Michael are friends, it's cute. They talk science about the asteroid. It could be very cool

Tilly goes off on her asteroid collecting mission

What am I looking at here? What happened to the back wall? This does not look okay. Why did they have to get such a huge piece?

Pike is given the Disco, Michael is worried how Saru will take this. Pike continues to be cute and wants to redecorate the ready room so that people can come over for nice chat's with him

I don't get the significance of this

Why would he have Michael? How close do you think Pike and Spock were???

Michael says it's her fault they haven't talked in years. Pike sings Spock's praises. (again this doesn't seem like a thing real people would do about a person they know and more like something fans would say about their idol)

The enterprise was on a 5 year mission and missed the war. They were not happy about it, according to Pike

Were they banging? Just asking... because I kind of ship them now

Michael finds out Spock is not on the Enterprise but took off without telling Pike where or why he was going. (at least some things stay the same I guess)

Michael goes to see Spock's quarters and somehow that is allowed? It seems the door wasn't even locked. The room is cool, reminds me of the room he had in TOS. there are definite callbacks to that, which was nice

What? What was Michael's rank at the beginning of the show? Was she already a commander? That would seem to imply that Michael is a lot older than Spock, right? Or that Spock did not join Star Fleet right away

Also Spock was a computer genius and yet all his files are right there for anyone to listen to... Nice...

Also Spock has had visions about the signals and thinks his guest will get him killed.

We get this horifying flashback to kid!Spock. Seriously, that is the face of a serial killer

The episode ends with Michael finding Spock with the map of all the signal locations. I'm assuming he knew these before the signals actually happened??? Maybe?

What did I think about the episode: It was mostly fun and enjoyable. I need to find out more about what's going on with Spock. I don't know if it was the right move to have Spock on this show, because I'm sure I'm not the only one who is now mostly in this for him, instead of the new characters this show is supposed to be about. 3/5 stars

Great recap! I loved the episode, but then I'm quite happy to handwave certain things if the characters I love are getting the character development I want.

I, too, loved the "do we have him?!" panic moment on the bridge, and you are so right, they make a great couple.

The whole Stamets/Hugh thing continues to annoy me. Like, great, we got a canonical m/m marriage, including a kiss, but then they proceeded to Kill The Gay in a stupid way, purely as a breadcrumb/beginning of the reveal that the cute human was in fact a klingon. (But I too loved that D/s moment in the recording Stamets watched XD )

OMG! The cookie fortune! Get thee to TOS pilot episode 'The Cage'! O.O
