I was reading yuletide prompts, as you do, when I stumbled upon someone who had made Outlander prompts and then I was transported to being like 14 maybe when I went through a lot of the series, until I was finally like, dude this is too much drama for two people to have and when it got confusing and there was even more time travel? I think I read until they went to America(?) and then finally abandoned it because I got tired waiting for the next book and found better things to read... But anyway, it gave me nostalgia for the series and also reminded me of the weird (and super problematic) m/m pairings and potential the books had. Now I'm kind of tempted to watch the show just for those reasons??? Also I see Lord John has appeared in the show too. *aaah*


What else happened this week: I saw the new Star Trek trailer and I'm still very confused about why Spock has a beard, but hopefully this will somehow inspire people to write new Spock/Kirk fic. I wonder what the age difference is in this version. I mean in tos Spock is older than Jim, but in the new movies they seem to be pretty much the same age? or at least it's written that way in fic more often than not. idk, I just want new Kirk/Spock stuff to read.

I also really want to go see the new Spider Man cartoon, but I'm not sure the schedule will work out. It came out at a really weird time of the year, or is that just me? I guess Star Wars always comes out around Christmas too...

Anyway, tomorrow is the last day before Christmas holiday!!! 5 freaking days off work in a row. Bliss! But then it's straight to moving next Thursday, which sucks.

At least I got my permanent contract at work today... I'm still kind of salty though as my boss didn't even congratulate me when I told her I had officially graduated and had my diploma and all the shit she had been insisting I get before they will give me the permanent contract. Thanks a lot, it's not like that would have been basic manners, I guess that's too much to expect at this point.

My cat has been staying with my mom for the past month and I miss her! It will be so nice to see her again on Saturday

Then more generally about work, I don't know how worried I should be about this, but I've noticed I'm getting super calloused about human suffering, especially with kids. I mean I think you need to have that sort of attitude to some degree or you just get burned out, but like I really wonder what sort of story I would have to hear now to make me shocked? At this point I'm like, yep, humans are terrible and parents fuck up their kids in myriad ways and pretty often they really have no idea how harmful their behavior even is.

What I am still surprised with is how easily kids/teenagers seem to give up, like they can be like 9 and saying their life is ruined, or they can never become anything, or they are young teens like 13-15 and have just decided that yep, because my parent(s) were pieces of shit that must mean I have to follow in their footsteps. I guess that's at least comforting, I think it's time to change professions when I am willing to just accept that too and not feel angry and frustrated.

Thank you! I haven't had any time off work since Midsummer, so this is so welcome. Can't wait for next summer when I finally have paid vacation time. :D

Yay, time off! My library’s closed between Christmas and New Year’s, I’m so excited.

Also that “life is shit” thing is I THINK is partly a leftover from Tumblr/Twitter “humor.” Like, remember when everyone was saying they were dumpster fires or whatever? For years and years? It switched to being more positive in recent months, but memes filter through to the younger kids at a slower rate (probably because of access? They don’t see them first-hand, they just get passed through the tween grapevine) so it’ll probably still be around for a while.

Yeah, tumblr humor got a bit too dark and nihilistic for my taste. I mean it's understandable why that type of humor is popular now especially in the US but woof

Oddly, this is my exact experience with the show, minus the part about waiting for the next book to come out. Too much drama and I lost interest when they went to America, but mainly too much drama.

Haha~ I actually went to look up the books on wikipedia and was surprised there are only 8. For some reason I thought it was one of those monster series with like 20 parts... but yeah it seems so overdramatic in a "the straights are at it again" style. :D

Which is a shame, because I'm so here for historical/period dramas usually

My first exposure to Outlander was the show, and I REALLY liked it, for the historical drama with-some-fantasy-time-travel-thrown-in aspect. But then they left Scotland, which I adored as a setting, and then when they went to Jamaica and then America, it was clear we were going on a world tour of 'all the things in history the author can make them interfere with' and I lost interest. Who WANTS to fight in the Revolutionary War when they could clearly avoid it?!?!

I read the Lord John books because I'm extremely prone to interest in historical mysteries. Then I started watching the Outlander show with my mother. I became far less interested in it once they got to America and it's hard to tell her that I'm totally bored with it.

Are they any good? I've been thinking of getting the first one on my audible coin, but I wasn't sure if it was worth the money.

Oof, that's not super great, it's hard to tell someone you don't like a thing anymore if it used to be a shared interest. Also isn't there a lot of sex in the show? (I remember the books having a lot) that would be awkward to watch with my mom, but maybe that's just me, or I'm remembering the content wrong, it's been ages and ages since I read the books.

Also random, but hi, I heard you like the Wild and Mikko Koivu? Welcome. :D I haven't been following the games this season as I have no time to spare, especially not 2-3 hours three times a week and also because I'm still mad at them for being so mediocre all the time and never winning anything...

I enjoyed them when I was reading them, but now I know the context from watching the TV show, and I'm not sure that I'd enjoy them as much on a re-read now that I know what the rest of the setting is like. It's weird. But if you're a fan of the series, you'd probably like these as well.

There's a lot of sex in the show, yes, and they did film the famous rape scene. Which I also watched next to my mother. It was very awkward especially since she constantly complains about sex in movies.

Yes, yes, I do like both those things far more than I should, for someone who only seriously started watching hockey again to have background noise for cross stitching (podcasts proved too prone to cause counting errors; basketball has shoe squeaks.) I don't stitch when I watch any longer....

I got too invested. I just need to see if I continue watching this team after Koivu retires/leaves/whatever. It would depress me if they win after he leaves because I don't want his haters to be even accidentally proved correct.

I've only watched S1 of Outlander, but I was quite obsessed with it for one summer (I sure wasn't alone LOL). I just liked Claire so much and the fact that while she is the awesome, wish-fulfilment protagonist, she isn't just an Independent Modern Woman who gets everything right. For some reason I lost interest in the beginning of S2 though. The other half of my enjoyment was being in Scotland I suppose (I did like Tobias Menzies as Black Jack Randall too).

That's good to hear that Claire is a good character. I don't really remember that much about the books, except being a bit annoyed how every man ever wanted to bone her. :D I think I will actually have to give this show a chance, especially if they actually filmed in Scotland, because hello! beautiful scenery porn (and that's good to know too ;))

It's definitely worth watching almost for the scenery alone :D And all the Scottish history stuff is woven in really well with the time travel romance story, imo.
