ideas and complaining about work

I really hope that if fandom, or at least parts of fandom, come back to DW for a while we could get back fests, where there would be a theme or prompts for fanfic and then people would have time to write and then everyone would post their fic. I really don't like the exchange versions that have completely replaced fests, as I feel it's too much pressure to write a fic for a specific person according to their wishes. It also makes it so much easier to have multi fandom participation if the parameters are more trope or prompt specific instead of trying to match participants by their pairings/fandoms *sigh*

Then a real life update. I'm sick and at home, I went to see a nurse yesterday after leaving work in the middle of the day and she wrote me a sick leave note for wednesday-friday. So on the one hand, yay free time from work, but at the same time, urgh having the flu is not fun. I'm also really sick and tired of my boss, who is a terrible personal manager and seems to have no skill in dealing with her employees in a way that's not demeaning/mean/rude or just inconsiderate. Also I still don't have my new contract for January and I have a feeling she's not even that keen on giving me a new contract. So that sucks and I'm thinking that if they give me the new contract I'll stay until autumn (so I can use my holiday days and have an actual vacation for once) and then quit, unless something changes for the better. This really sucks, because I've actually pretty much liked the work itself and it's really disheartening how much effect a bad boss and a bad relationship with your boss can effect me personally.

I binged the whole Castlevania netflix show yesterday/this morning and it was very good (hello ot3!), but very very gory and violent.

I've also started listening to "everybody hates Rand" podcast about the Wheel of Time books and because they are super critical about Rand and to some extent of the other characters it's made me think about them and why I like or dislike some characters. I don't think they'll convince me not to like Rand (he's my favourite) but they make good points about how his views of women and how he treats women are really messed up and sexist. I think some of it is understandable and due to circumstance, but some of it is just bad writing from Jordan/Sanderson.

I've been thinking that I want to do one of those 'let's read' series about a book or a series for a while, but I'm torn about if I should pick something I've never read or do a reread. (if I did a reread I could pick something like the Goblin emperor, or one of the Dragon Age books, but I think it would be a good idea to start with a standalone, so I could maybe actually finish it) I think picking something is the hardest part... but it might also turn out to be a LOT of work and very time consuming, so I'm not sure I have the time. I think it might also be fun to do it like Mark reads does, and do a youtube video too, except that English is not my native language and I have an accent, not to mention that I doubt anyone would watch the videos anyway. :D haha~ I used to make voice posts on LJ sometimes, so I guess I could just do a recording instead. Does someone have ideas? Or recs to good read-along blogs they follow? I used to follow a lot of them on tor.com when they did wheel of time and Malazan, but they idiotically stopped those like half way through.

Boo flu. I have had TWO colds this autumn, which is just unfair. I thought we were only supposed to get one! And I still remember when I was a kid it was fun to get a cold because you got a day off school and I could just spent the day reading what I wanted. Now the cold is all-encompassing and I definitely have no brain for reading.

I saw parts of Castlevania last weekend. Well, more like, my friends were watching it in another room while I was in the kitchen and could only hear the dialogue. Me: "I didn't remember how jokey this show was. I thought it was darker." Then I entered the room and there was a guy getting his eyes gouged by a dude drenched in his own blood. :'D

Ooh, The Goblin Emperor. If you did a reread of that one, I would totally read along.

I've had a cold/flu three times since May, I think it's totally unfair and should not be allowed! I think it's some kind of cosmic payback because I did not get sick for almost three years before this year. :/

Yep, it was kind of weird how it was sort of jokey and then uber violent the next moment, but I thought the story was very cool. I especially liked how we actually got grey villains where it was possible to totally understand their motives etc, while also knowing they were doing evil things.

I've been wanting to a reread and this way I could combine it with the blog idea and see how it goes. :D I'll have to just pick something and start, there's no other way of knowing if it's something I will have the time and stamina to keep doing in the long run.

I usually get the good old A&B, one in the autumn and one in the spring. I was sick early this year so I thought, great, I'm done for the year! No such luck... Hope you get well soon.

I didn't catch all of it, so I missed a lot of the plot, but I liked the villains too. I especially liked that the other vampires were sort-of-using Dracula to further their own gains (?), and we saw their internal conflicts and differences.

Rereads are always fun to follow, but yeah they are time consuming. In any case, DW is probably a good place to do it, as it's not so fast-paced here.

Yeah, it was really cool what they did with Carmilla (the female vampire) and how as the viewer you were rooting for her(?) even though she was super evil. :D

A let's read does sound fun, but very time consuming, yeah.

There's been a few fests already - one Magical Realism one, and then a three sentence one that I know of! I'm sure there are even more going on in new and old communities right now.

I'm sorry you're sick. I hope you feel better soon!

That's what I'm most afraid of, but at the same time, I won't know how much time it will take unless I try it for myself, right? :')

Yeah, I saw the magical realism one! I hope it's a harbinger of other fests to come.

More fests would be fun! I noticed that zines and anthologies were coming back into fashion over on Tumblr, so maybe fests are going to make their way back, too.

I would LOVE a let's read! Especially for The Goblin Emperor, one of my favorite books! You could totally do a little podcast or something and host it on Soundcloud, then have discussion posts over here.

Also, hi! I found you...somehow (on someone else's journal? the network page?) and I liked your recent posts, so I subscribed. :D

Yeah, let's so hope. More variety would be so welcome, or maybe I just hung out in the wrong parts of fandom, but all I've been seeing in like the past five years have been exchanges. (I also really miss big bang challenges where you had to write 50k, but I think it might be asking for too much to expect big bangs to go back to that)

Haha, well now there are two votes for the Goblin Emperor so I think I've solved which book I should do :D I'll need to think about the audio thing some more, I think it would be fun, but also adds another layer of work to the process.

I definitely remember seeing some fest/big bang announcements on Tumblr (even recently!), but of course I can't find them now. Maybe check out fandom_on_dw, I've noticed a good amount of announcements for new comms/fests/challenges/etc. lately.
