The new year started badly with the Wild losing to the Blues 1-2. They officially suck and I hate them. (also it's almost 4am and I'm a bit cranky)

There was a big fireworks thing at the market place at midnight because it was an anniversary of the town. They obviously put a lot of money into it, it looked super cool.

The under 20 team for Finland came in second in their group and will play the Czechs (omg I can't spell that) next for a place in the medal games??? Maybe, I'm really not sure. >_>

The Canadian players were wearing collars and I have no idea why. It gave me all kinds of ideas though, so maybe it's better that I don't know the real reason, as I'm sure it's a boring one.

why

Fuck the Minnesota Wild. Fuck them. Can, this, just, stop. Like, if they can't win, can they disappear or something for a while so I can stop being sad and disappointed in them? That'd be fun. Or, like, better than how it is now.

(I do know what the neck things are for. It's boring. Do you want to know or would you rather leave it to your imagination?)

Don't wish that, then they'll end up losing another NHL team like last time... But yeah things suck right now. >_>

Yes, please tell me. I really can't think of what it's actually for.

the won! (against buffalo, but it still counts!)

It's a neck guard. I was talking to Kate/Madecunningly, who plays hockey. She says that they don't really do a whole lot. They're kevlar fabric, so they'll stop cuts, and the skin won't get broken, but obviously they aren't super protective. You can still get bruised or hurt or whatever. But women and junior players are required to wear it. Basically it's semi effective protective gear.

Yes, at this point I'll take anything... Are you worried about Yeo getting fired, or would you want him to be?

Cool thanks for the explanation. I guess it would protect the neck from a skate blade coming vertically, but wouldn't do much if it hit the wrong spot horizontally. Still I guess some protection is better than none.

The collars are just neck protection, though it seems insane to me that it's only mandatory to protect your neck if you're under 20. Because over-20s have already developed their hard adult carapace and no longer have vulnerable blood vessels in that area? I do understand that actually wrapping everyone in a nice protective layer of bubblewrap would impede their skating, but surely there's no performance advantage to not protecting your neck?

On the other hand, you can always simply consider the fic possibilities. If nothing else, all the hockey reporters seem to want to talk about is that Drouin needs someone to sit on him or something because he is losing his MIND with excitement/nerves...

Weird, if that's the case who don't any of the other teams make their players wear them? Also how is that thin strip going to protect your neck? (it looks really snug too, I'd think it would be distracting until the players got used to wearing it)

I definitely like the naughtier possibilities a lot better. :D

Oh, and thanks for solving the mystery for me!

They're not mandatory except by rule of Hockey Canada, I believe. And hockey is astonishingly resistant to protection in any form, which probably accounts for why it isn't universal, AND why it seems awfully small. (I'm sure they're all used to a certain amount of bulk though, and it's really not like one or two games of weird isn't worth it for a bit more protection?)

The naughtier possibilities are definitely more fun, though given how hard Canada is going to shun those children if they fuck it up again this year, it does occasionally seem rather dystopian.
