Does someone want to play D&D?
Jul. 13th, 2019 06:30 pmSo I've been meaning to start DMing a new D&D campaign soonish and I was wondering if someone on my circle would be interested in joining? It would be one of the official D&D module adventures (I own Waterdeep Dragonheist and Lost Mines of Phandelver, but I'd be open to buying one of the other ones, if people have preferences)
It would obviously be online game with voice on discord and the game on roll20. It will most likely be on a Saturday and start around 6-7pm GTM+3 which would make it around noon in America. I'd like to do a weekly game, but if it's too often for people it could be every other week.
New players definitely welcome!
Also I saw this quiz on someones journal and nabbed it. I was super happy with what I got, and looking at my answers and what other options I could have gotten was super interesting too. :D
I Am A: True Neutral Human Wizard (5th Level)
Ability Scores:
Strength-13
Dexterity-12
Constitution-13
Intelligence-14
Wisdom-15
Charisma-13
Alignment:
True Neutral A true neutral character does what seems to be a good idea. He doesn't feel strongly one way or the other when it comes to good vs. evil or law vs. chaos. Most true neutral characters exhibit a lack of conviction or bias rather than a commitment to neutrality. Such a character thinks of good as better than evil after all, he would rather have good neighbors and rulers than evil ones. Still, he's not personally committed to upholding good in any abstract or universal way. Some true neutral characters, on the other hand, commit themselves philosophically to neutrality. They see good, evil, law, and chaos as prejudices and dangerous extremes. They advocate the middle way of neutrality as the best, most balanced road in the long run. True neutral is the best alignment you can be because it means you act naturally, without prejudice or compulsion. However, true neutral can be a dangerous alignment when it represents apathy, indifference, and a lack of conviction.
Race:
Humans are the most adaptable of the common races. Short generations and a penchant for migration and conquest have made them physically diverse as well. Humans are often unorthodox in their dress, sporting unusual hairstyles, fanciful clothes, tattoos, and the like.
Class:
Wizards are arcane spellcasters who depend on intensive study to create their magic. To wizards, magic is not a talent but a difficult, rewarding art. When they are prepared for battle, wizards can use their spells to devastating effect. When caught by surprise, they are vulnerable. The wizard's strength is her spells, everything else is secondary. She learns new spells as she experiments and grows in experience, and she can also learn them from other wizards. In addition, over time a wizard learns to manipulate her spells so they go farther, work better, or are improved in some other way. A wizard can call a familiar- a small, magical, animal companion that serves her. With a high Intelligence, wizards are capable of casting very high levels of spells.

Date: 2019-07-13 07:21 pm (UTC)I already have two games or I'd look into yours. (Playing a VtM & running a D&D.)

Date: 2019-07-14 12:40 am (UTC)I got Neutral Good Human Wizard on the quiz, which is exactly what my first D&D character ever was, so I can't really be mad, lol. Also it's probably appropriate given that my first thought when I committed to play was: "Is there some supplemental reading she'd like me to do? Because I'd love that!" (For the setting or the starting situation or something like that, I mean. I don't want to dig too deep into looking at the modules in case of spoilers, but if you know what stuff you want us to know, lay it on me!)
Though I kind of want to try playing a teeny bit against type! The only difficulty is deciding what I want. I like spellcasting and ranged attacks, but that still gives me lots of options! Maybe druid or sorcerer? I know I don't want to be human for sure, but how elaborate do I want to get? I have some ideas for a dwarf chara, but I also keep looking at the extreme extraness of the non-core races in Volo's Guide to Monsters and giggling delightedly.
But I also want to see what other people want to play because balanced parties make me very pleased and I kind of like the idea of playing something I wouldn't normally think of to round out a party.
Sorry for babbling a bunch of ideas at you, I'm just excited! Please feel free to squash me if I pick things that would break your game: my problem is too many ideas, not commitment to one!

Date: 2019-07-15 08:56 am (UTC)You can play any race you want, I don't mind having the exotic races, but it would be cool if you came up with a reason why you left your original home and ended up where the game starts. I'm going to try to incorporate as much as I can of the players backgrounds/backstory because I think having a few personal quests is fun (also good practice for me to make my own content within a premade module)

Date: 2019-07-15 09:07 am (UTC)There are a LOT of really fun and cool videos on youtube to help out with learning stuff about D&D too (this is how I've learned like 60% of all my D&D knowledge)
Yeah, no the test is definitely not a great way to pick your character :D
I've not decided the schedule yet if we do biweekly or once a week, the trouble with doing it more infrequently is that the campaign will take longer and is a longer commitment for everyone (I haven't done the math but I think 1-5 lvl campaign twice a month can take up to a year, or close to that) also everyone has more time to forger what has happened and what they wanted to do, unless everyone takes notes. :P I'm going to ask opusculasedfera which she would prefer and if both of you would rather to biweekly that's fine with me.

Date: 2019-07-15 02:14 pm (UTC)I checked out the blurb and Waterdeep is set in a big city and it starts with the party getting hired to do a job of some kind, right? So I can def work that into my character concept.

Date: 2019-07-15 02:44 pm (UTC)Any ideas about what kind of character you'd want to play? I'm dithering between druid and sorcerer, though I could also go ranger or cleric if someone else has really strong preferences and we want a bit more balance in the party. Do you like magic or smashing things or trickery?
Also,
I can do weekly or biweekly: I'm excited enough to want to play weekly (if you couldn't tell from my jumping on you with enthusiasm), but I'd rather have a schedule that works for everyone.

Date: 2019-07-16 04:11 am (UTC)And hmmm, yes, I see what you mean.
ETA: one think I should mention--I have some wrist problems, which I think are relevant here only inasmuch as I can't click on things repeatedly. I think it should be fine--I looked up roll20, it's got apps, I don't usually have any problems with my tablet--but I did want to mention it, just in case.
Also, I just wanted to say again, I'm really excited about this, and I think it's super cool that you're doing this!!

Date: 2019-07-16 04:24 am (UTC)I'm not sure yet, tbh? Hmmm. When I played Skyrim I had fun being a really sneaky magic user. Before I looked over the pdf
That would be awesome, thank you! :)
Hmmm. Maybe we could start weekly, and slow down if necessary? Or what about a three weeks on, one week off type schedule?

Date: 2019-07-16 06:02 am (UTC)The long answer ... I actually think that I'm gonna do a post on my journal about. It was the first system/setting I ever played. There was a brief thing in late high school that lasted like 2-3 sessions, but the group I've played with regularly had our first game in 2003. We've played just about every week since.

Date: 2019-07-16 02:56 pm (UTC)We can sometimes skip a week, especially if more than one person in the party can't make it, but I'd like to try to keep the schedule as consistent as possible. (there's a way to set a bad precedent with games like these where people then start slipping and don't commit to the game. I mean I get it we're all adults here and life happens, but it can get annoying if the group is always missing someone)
It's a good idea to make sure you can use the roll20 app with a free account, I have a inkling it might be a paid account perk. D&D doesn't require constant mouse clinking, but there are things you need to click on your character sheet for example when you attack, or cast a spell, or if you want to move your character etc. I don't know if it helps, but you only need to click things on your turn, so there is usually 5-10 minutes between turns as other players do stuff

Okay, yeah, that makes sense! :P

Date: 2019-07-17 04:16 am (UTC)(I'm leaning towards cleric, and I'd also really love to talk it over with you! I could dm you, if that would work better than Discord? Or just out everything in Discord chat, and wait for you to see it, maybe?)
That makes perfect sense! Okay; put me down for once weekly, then, if that's what works best for everyone
& that does help, actually. I'm a programmer, so of course I have to do some clicking; it's just a problem when I have to do a bunch of repeated clicking, really. And I can usually get some use out of keyboard navigation, tab and enter and all that jazz.
All right! I'm off to bed, it's past my bedtime. See you tomorrow!
