Star trek Discovery season 2 ep 2 (short)

I don't have the energy to actually take screencaps of the episode and write a bunch about it, but I really liked the episode. This recap of the episode is pretty great: Tor review of New Eden (spoiler warning)

What I liked most was the difference compared to the first season when almost all episodes were just about Burnham, this new season has a more traditional Trek feel (not that I'm an expert) and more characters have stuff to do and get to interact with each other. Also the lighter tone of the season continues (I'm so glad the Klingon war thing is over now)

Things I'm more iffy about:
- The religious stuff introduced in this episode...
- The Spock stuff (still questioning why they had to introduce his character in this show and also the things revealed in this episode about where he's right now)


Then unrelated, I went back to Assassin's Creed Odyssey yesterday and I'm now at level 30, so I'm trucking along nicely. Somehow I have lost the ability to take screencaps of my playthrough tough, which sucks!!! Let me screencap every cut scene where Kassandra looks awesome you cowards! *shakes fist*

Oh and some real life stuff:
- It's been really cold for the past week. Thanks winter you're doing great, but could you not so much?
- We had two lecture days at work (I really don't know what to call this stuff, it's not work training, and it's not a course we are taking either, but it's education about issues we deal with at work...) last week too and we learned a lot about trauma, over generational trauma, dissociation and all sorts of things from this family therapist. (good stuff)

I'm watching Disco too. :)

I'm also a little iffy about Spock. I thought introducing Pike was already too close to TOS (not to mention Sarek in S1! And, well, the whole... Michael being part of that family thing...) but I guess we have to accept that they're really Going There. I ended up liking Sarek, and I'm giving Pike a chance, so I guess I should try to accept Disco!Spock as well.

My biggest complaint with the show is how fast everything happens. The first ep was so explodey and dramatic! I liked this episode better. The premise of the ep was very classic flavour Trek IMO.

I really like the entire crew though, and it's great just seeing them do their thing. Tilly is my fave <3 I'm hoping we get to know the deck crew better as this season goes on, like we finally learned something about Owosekun. I really like Detmer for some reason, I want to know more about her. :D

I'm still not sure how I feel about Sarek, because he seems so nice and understanding/accepting of humans, which makes me question why he and Spock would then be on such bad terms. It makes Spock seem childish more than someone who had to get out of an oppressive situation where their father was trying to make them behave in a certain way. (which seems to be what was happening in TOS and even to some extent in the new trek movies, and definitely in a lot of fic :D)

(also the kid Spock in last episode was so creepy! I kept saying he was a serial killer in training while watching it...)

Yeah, I hope this season we will get a more classic trek vibe with more stand alone episodes like these two have been. I'm seeing a lot of positives in the way other characters are getting their moment and get scenes together. I hope they keep going to a more ensemble cast direction.

Owosekun/Detmer seems like a pairing with potential and even without slash goggles it's been so nice to get more about them, even if it's mostly been small moments.

I've enjoyed the moments between Michael and Sarek, but it's true that he doesn't quite gel with original Sarek. I guess they are trying to make the situation more nuanced with showing his side of the story, but it does undermine Spock's characterisation. And I am reaaally worried about what the rift between Spock and Michael was. That could go in many different directions, and affect both of the characters badly. (Like, if it's a romantic relationship thing -- DNW. If it's an ideological difference thing, it needs to be super well done or one of them is going to be the obviously wrong party.)

I also hope the more balanced ensemble cast vibe keeps going on. I like Michael, but I'd like to have more stand-alone episodes too. I wish everything didn't have to be connected to the main plot... It's just so rare these days! The last Trek show I watched before this was DS9 and while it does have its overarching plot, there's always room for an episode about what's going on in the Ferengi bar. :')

OMG I'm so happy I'm not alone with my Owosekun/Detmer feelings! I very much see the potential. :D (I'm not really in the fandom but watching more casually, so I have no idea what the shipping landscape is like.)
