Travelling \0/
Mar. 30th, 2012 11:30 pmI just booked my trip to London! I'm going in the beginning of May and staying for a week. I really hope that's enough time, so I can do a thorough job at the National Archives. (maybe I need to explain that a bit more? I need to do my thesis for my master's degree and my sources are held in the archives there.)
The plane tickets + accommodation were close to 200€ but I think that's really reasonable. (the hostel was 18€ per night) I had planned to go in June but dude all the hostels were already booked solid (and the places that still had vacancies were super expensive) Things are really moving along, it's awesome... and to think that a month ago I had no idea what my thesis was even going to be about. xD I'm actually feeling pretty optimistic about this whole thing and eager to get started. (so no wonder I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop and something to go horribly wrong)

I didn't have any expectations and it still managed to be disappointing. :/ Also, you need to explain stuff to me (like the hand sing thing they had, and why was it called the Hunger games in the first place), because I think the movie was quite unclear about some things and I don't have time to read the books. x)

Date: 2012-03-31 12:17 pm (UTC)Yep, it wasn't all that great. I think it needed to have more epic music for one, I thought the music it had was really lackluster. And I think the whole thing suffered from the rating, so it wasn't as brutal as the book. (the book was totally more like Battle Royal)
The hand sign is something they do to honour their dead, or someone they know is going to die (if I remember that right, but something close to that anyway) I thought it was really stupid that they didn't explain it when it's then used so many times in the movie. To be honest I don't know why they are called the Hunger Games... maybe because the winner gets a nice house afterwards and a lot of food and money, whereas most of the people in the districts never have enough money and it's said in the books that people starve to death during winters etc. And also you can get more food for your family is you submit your kids name into the raffle for the tributes, so like Gale and Katniss both had their name in the bowl bunch of times. So the poorer you are the more times your name is in the bowl because your family bought food while gambling with their kids lives. Like I said the books are a lot more messed up than the movie was... and sorry if the explanation didn't make any sense... ^_^;

'Cause in the movie you really didn't get a good grasp (or at least I didn't) how long the game lasts, so I thought the players are going to starve or something. x) Gah, maybe I need to read the books during the summer, cause the idea is still pretty interesting.
